When Gurunam Singh Dhillon (Manoj Phawa) took the leap of faith and moved to Bombay from Punjab, hoping to make it big in the city, he not only married the love of his life (Seema Bhargava), but he also inherited 22 buffalo. Cut to 1995, Papa Dhillon now has everything he had always hoped for and has built Jai Matarani Doondh Bhandar with love, dahi, and lots of paneer (brace yourselves: there are plenty of dairy references in the movie for everyone who is lactose intolerant). But one characteristic trait that he failed to pass on to his only son, Suraj Singh Dhillon (Diljit Dosanjh), is his innate ability to win over girls.
So when the greedy expert brings home the kundali of an English-speaking girl from Bhandup and dons shorts, the entire Dhillon clan jumps with excitement.Not so soon; a little someone stinks of butter and must be avoided forever. Multiple rejections later, Sukhi, Suraj's best friend, who only mimics Amitabh Bachchan from his angry youth phase, suggests that he is the baddie girls usually crave. So when a prospect finally nods his head, he loses that last flickering hope to a series of photos of him drinking beer. Who has defamed him and the family? And, most importantly, which "bharatiya naari" will marry him now? Suraj refuses to go dark and must now be avenged. However, the culprit: self-proclaimed wedding detective with an impressive repertoire of 48 revelations, Madhu Mangal Rane, ignores his dubious plans. What happens when these two metaphor-throwing ego maniacs collide and Who is going to lose what here? 'Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari' delves into the concept of arranged marriages and all the spying that happens within families by that 'an achha ladka / ladki', and guess what, we're laughing! Dressed in a nauvari saree, nath and exuding a certain charm that can easily be mistaken for a local hottie, Manoj Bajpayee is hilarious as the lame undercover wedding detective, gossiping at a local temple in his opening scene. The jokes are hyper-local and the attitude too relatable. A little later, an equally fun and experienced comedian joins the painting, Annu Kapoor as Kaka, a family friend and a business liability whose only contribution is that he once helped Rane's late father with 1,200 rupees. The two feed off each other's energies and their comic timing is impeccable, especially when arguing over bills and biryanis. Fatima Sana Shaikh is Turshi Rane (Turshi, not Tulsi): a "gharelu ladki" by day and a DJ in the closet at night;She is attractive and a satisfying chameleon: demure when the situation calls for it, rebellious when the going gets tough. What takes this movie up a notch is Diljit's excellent
dialogue delivery and comedic timing. Something as cheesy as "kya kar rahin hai, butter hands?" or "at first glance mein, torchlight pe, mujhe tumse pyaar hogaya" would have been complicated for many actors, but it enchants in the most striking scenes and makes people laugh, knowing full well that the joke is stale. Her camaraderie with Sukhi and the feud with Bajpayee are what keep the momentum of the film running at thunderous speed; the first half in particular. But "Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari" is a brainless comedy (don't be condescending here), and not everything is meant to add up.
